Jobs Program at Soup Kitchen
September 4, 2009

Through volunteer Kathy Beckett, the Covenant Soup Kitchen is now providing job search assistance on Tuesdays from 9AM to 4PM.  Services include informal assessment of interests and skills as well as help with overcoming stumbling blocks to employment.  Since it is key that job seekers do all that they can to be competitive in this difficult job market, one to one assistance with completing applications, writing resumes, and practicing for interviews are among the services offered.  Individualized computer job search is also provided.

Utilizing all available services in the Willimantic area is emphasized and so guests are referred to agencies such as CT Works and to the Bureau of Rehabilitation Services as well as to WAIM for interview clothes.    Assistance with applying for business start up help through the Small Business Administration can also be provided.

The Soup Kitchen in partnership with Windham Region Transit District  offers bus passes to job interviews, referral to access interview clothes, and assistance with procuring picture IDs and Drivers’ licenses through the Windham  No-Freeze Shelter.

Kathy’s experience with the Labor Dept. and degrees in occupational therapy and theology give her a wonderful  experiential background along with her sincere desire to help those in need.  Kathy says.  “While my focus was initially case management, I repeatedly saw men and women who wanted more than anything to find a job.  A special thanks to Kathy for her volunteering in this most needed area for our guest community.   Her very special  efforts are really making a difference
